Guide to Hannover's Restaurants
Here are some recommendations.
Shopping in Hannover
The main shopping area in Hannover is located in the city center, near the underground station Kröpcke and Hauptbahnhof (Central Railway Station). It is around 4km away from the conference location. This is claimed to be one of the most popular shopping areas in Germany! The most interesting shopping streets are Georgstrasse (running between Steintor and Aegidientorplatz) and Galarie Luise (running between the Opera and Hauptbahnhof).
The Red Line Walk
A Red Line is painted on the pavement which weaves its way through the inner city joining up
36 prime attractions. This "do it yourself" city tour (4.2km round trip) is accompanied by an informative
brochure which describes all of the interesting buildings and monuments
you meet along the way.
The brochure costs only € 2 and is available at the Tourist
Information Center in various languages.
The Old Town (Altstadt)
The historic center of Hannover
with its picturesque half-timbered houses has a very special atmosphere. The Market Church (Marktkirche)
and many other historic buildings are located in this area. This is
located a few hundred meters south-west of the central railway
station. There are a number of nice restaurants and small shops in this area.
The Old Town Hall (Altes Rathhaus)
The
old town hall is located in the old town (naturally!). There are a
number of small shops and restaurants in this area. Specifically, there
is a nice Chinese restaurant in the basement!
The New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus)
Four large models of the city
in the main hall show how the face of Hannover has changed over the
centuries. The dome with its
golden top rises an impressive 97.73 meters above the park. You can have a
splendid view over the whole of Hannover from the top (don't worry, there is a lift!). Guided tours are also available. The town hall is located at around 1 km south of the central railway station, and is close to the old town.
The Maschsee Lake
It is worth taking
a stroll on the banks of the Maschsee lake, located in the south of
Hannover, quite close to the New Town Hall.
Herrenhausen Garden
The Herrenhausen Garden
is one of the main tourist attractions in Hannover. It is located
within walking distance (less than 2km) from the conference location.
Zoo Hannover
The Zoo
is around 4km away from the center, located in the north-west of
Hannover. You can take the tram 11 (direction Zoo) from Kröpcke.
